SAPS 520 Gun Import/Export Permit Application Form (.pdf 109K)
This SAPS 520 form is required by the South African Police Service. You must provide such things as your name, your passport number, and a description of the firearms and ammunition you are bringing into South Africa. This form MUST be signed in the Presence of a Police Officer upon Arrival.

If filled out in US.  This one is if you want to complete your gun permit application in the USA prior to your arrival - and well in advance – in other words, if you obtain your permit before you arrive in South Africa, then you fill out your USA details.

If filled out upon arrival in South Africa.  This one is if you complete your gun permit application just before or on your safari to South Africa – then you sign your name and give your details in the presence of the South African Police at Johannesburg Airport.
U.S. Customs Form 4457 (.pdf 331K)

U.S. Customs Form 4457 must be completed and stamped in the USA before boarding your flight to South Africa. It proves ownership of personal items, such as rifles, taken out of the country.

"You have to take your guns to the local customs office. You should also take your camera, binoculars etc. and have them put on the form as well. The customs officers verify serial numbers and look at the items and then they sign the form. If you need to find a customs office, go to www.customs.gov and click on ports and then scroll down to your state [see Locations link below]. It will list each city that has an office."

American Airlines Gun Restrictions

SA Airlink Gun Restrictions
SA Airlink has discontinued the transportation of firearms to certain airports. Hunting rifles shall only be transported to and from the following destinations: OR Thambo Johannesburg airport, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Kimberley, Polokwane, Phalaborwa and Kruger Mpumalanga airport at Nelspruit.
